When we arrived at school and started to carry the VW, security alerted us that when we crossed the access road, they would give us 5 minutes head start before notifying the police. I don't think they anticipated what we were planning. Using their warning, we didn't cross the road until we were completely around the back of school at the pool. We then lifted and dropped the frame over the fence, dumped it into the diving pool and split. Then we went over the fence behind the school and crossed the river canal balancing on a pipe. Then thru the housing track and hide in Allen Tarrent’s garage and back yard while the police helicopter was circling overhead. Along the way, Bob Johnson (RIP) saw a mattress in a front yard that he thought would be great for his van. Bad idea, the guy came out was chasing him until he dropped it. We met up afterward at Denny's by 5 Points. I think Artie Bigelow was pulled over on the way, but they let him go. If the stunt was pulled today, I'm sure we would have been arrested and not allowed participate in graduation. Thank goodness the statue of limitations has expired and I can share this tale. We did pose for a picture by the pool the next day. Bob Ashmore was the photographer. Oh, and the spray painted graffiti on the car. That was done by us and for the most part, was our jersey #’s. Really bright!!
